Radiowo landfill

Municipal wastes of the northern districts of Warsaw have been on Radiowo landfill, situated in the northwestern part of Warsaw since 1962. The construction of Radiowo landfill was not good enough in regard to stability and environmental protection. Therefore having been used for many years, it was necessary to stabilise the embankments and to perform remedial works to protect against pollution of the surrounding groundwater system. Remedial works have been performed, including construction of a cut-off wall, a leachate drainage system and ecological remedial works, i.e. plant cover. Radiowo landfill is a very well recognized and monitored site. Lots of investigations of parameters of wastes, including waste morphology analysis, physical and hydraulic properties, WST (weight sounding tests), CPT (cone penetration test), settlement and lateral movement measurements, failure test and back analysis were carried out to evaluate and improve subsoil conditions of Radiowo site. The test results are used for calculating the water balance, stability analysis and groundwater modelling.
